Located a little over 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis, the city of Muncie, IN, is a great base to go on memorable day trips with your friends and check out the beautiful state parks that the state of Indiana has to offer. If you are searching for new destinations to visit in your 2022 Toyota Tundra, here are three nearby spots you should not miss while in town.

1. Summit Lake State Park

Established in 1998, Summit Lake State Park is a popular recreation area that attracts thousands of visitors each year with its breathtaking views, long hiking trails, and open fields. A well-known destination for birding and wildlife watching, this state park is located a little under 20 miles south of downtown Muncie, making it possible to reach it in just 25 minutes by car along Walnut Street and route IN-3.

As the name suggests, the main feature at Summit Lake State Park is the 800-acre body of water that stands right in the center of the park. Some of the facilities that make this an excellent weekend and day-trip destination for Muncie locals include fully equipped campgrounds with drinking water and electric hookups, picnic areas, a shelter house, fishing piers, and a swimming beach.

2. Whitewater Memorial State Park

Located a little over 60 miles southeast of downtown Muncie, Whitewater Memorial State Park is another excellent spot where you can spend some quality time with your family or a group of friends. Established in 1949 and covering an area of about 1,700 acres, this nature reserve welcomes over 240,000 visitors each year and is home to large populations of deer, rabbits, raccoons, owls, and woodpeckers.

While wildlife watching and photography are two of the most popular recreational activities at this sprawling nature reserve, Whitewater Memorial State Park is also an excellent spot for fishing, selective hunting, hiking, mountain biking, boating, kayaking, and canoeing. Getting here form the Muncie city center takes about one hour and 20 minutes by car, driving along route US-35.

3. Mounds State Park

Spanning an area of over 250 acres and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, Mounds State Park is not only a beautiful nature reserve but also an important historical site. Featuring ten ceremonial mounds built by the prehistoric Adena people, this state park is an excellent destination for anyone wanting to learn about the ancient cultures that once inhabited the area.
