The midsize Toyota 4Runner is a capable SUV that can take you smoothly down the highway but can also tackle off-road terrain with ease. Even with some modernization over the years, the 4 Runner still has a rugged exterior look, with a sturdy ladder frame to match. For the 2022 model year, Toyota added a new TRD Sport model to the lineup, and all trim levels gained LED high-beam headlights. Here's a look at the 2022 Toyota 4Runner.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Toyota offers the 4Runner in many trim levels. The SR5 starts with LED headlights, LED high beams, roof rails, and 17-inch wheels. The SR5 Premium adds to all this with the option for a sunroof, and the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium add a locking rear differential, off-road tires, and a hood scoop.
Step up to the Limited for 20-inch wheels and a sunroof, or choose the TRD Pro model with the Toyota grille, matte black 17-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, and off-road shocks. The new TRD Sport comes with a hood scoop, 20-inch wheels, Sport badging, and adaptive dampers.
Engine (Power)
Every 2022 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V-6 gas engine that puts out 270 horsepower and generates 278 pound-feet of torque. This system works with a five-speed automatic transmission, and it all comes standard with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive if you have any of the TRD trims. The all-wheel-drive system is optional for the SR5s and the Limited.
Performance
The 4Runner does an excellent job of providing a smooth ride on the road and feels composed when taking it around tight corners. Take this SUV off the road, and it can rock-climb and handle serious off-road terrain with ease. The strong frame provides the capacity to tow up to 5,000 pounds, and Toyota offers its multi-terrain select system that enables you to change drive settings based on the terrain. It features four modes, including Mud and Sand, Rock, Loose Rock, and Mogul.
Interior
The two rows in the 4Runner have room for five, along with a large cargo area that opens up to 89.7 cubic feet with the rear seats down. A power-adjustable driver's seat comes standard, along with cloth upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Limited model adds extras such as dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and driver's-seat memory settings.
Tech features in the 4Runner start with an 8-inch touch screen, an eight-speaker stereo, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and three USB ports. Every trim also has a 115-volt pout outlet. An upgraded JBL stereo comes with the Limited, and an upgraded 15-speaker JBL stereo comes standard in the TRD Pro.
Safety Features
Every 4Runner has a wide array of standard safety features as part of the Toyota Safety Sense suite. These include a low-speed adaptive cruise control system, forward collision warning with mitigation, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Every trim also has a rearview camera, a full suite of air bags, and traction and stability control.
