2009 Walk a Mile

What an incredible blessing the 2008 walk was......we experienced a true dosage of God's grace. The amount of people that walked and funds raised, doubled the 2007 walk.

This year's walk is lining up to be even bigger....It's on Valentines Day and the walk will finish at the Mission's new facility at the corner of Liberty and Memorial Streets.

The Mission's timing for a larger facility seems to be perfect, as if God's timing isn't always perfect. The current economic conditions leads us to believe that more and more people are going to need assistance in many ways.

Over the past four years, funds raised have gone to support the new 98-bed, 41,200 sq. ft. facility that is now a reality. But our work is not done. Now it's time to put the "Heart"Heart.jpg in the Mission in the form of necessities for daily living: towels, sheets, blankets, bedspreads, pillows, refrigeration units, and much more.

What an incredible testimonial of God's grace we have witnessed over the past months.  Numerous groups and individuals have provided special funds, and volunteered their time to help furnish and complete the new facility.

Last year three new items were added to the event. They turned out to be a great success. Two "Golden Sneaker" awards were created, the "Top Attendance Team" and the " Top Fundraising Team" (see additional information available about the Golden Sneakers). The Gathering, formerly First Chruch of God ECI, won both awards; they raised $6,022 and registered 92 walkers. These are traveling awards, meaning the winners must surrender them so someone else can win them for 2009. The third item was a drawing for a $50 gas card for all walkers that pre-registered, who couldn't use that!

Special recognition was given to the seven teams that raised over $1,000. Theses teams were: Cowan ELementary, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Northside Church of God, Riverside United Methodist Church, The Gathering , The Jar and Sallie Mae.

Our goals this year are to have 1,100 walkers and to raise $60,000.
